Two Louisiana sheriff's deputies face manslaughter charges in connection with the shooting death of a man during a tense confrontation near New Orleans last week, a use of deadly force that the sheriff said was unwarranted.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff told news outlets that he believes the two men who shot at Daniel Vallee were afraid for their lives. The two should face manslaughter charges, he said. He said that the two cooperated in the investigation and turned themselves in. Both were fired from their jobs.

The two officers were responding to a noise complaint outside a crack house in the Marrero community when they encountered the man sitting in the SUV. Vallee refused to leave the car.

They asked him. They begged him. They tried to get him to come out.

The engine on the vehicle was turned off at one point as officers tried to get him out of the car. When the engine was turned back on, many of my deputies drew their weapons.

One deputy was in front of the vehicle and another was to the side when the engine was turned on. The gunfire began after Vallee dropped his hands on the wheel.

The second deputy fired his weapon after the first deputy responded to the sound of gunfire.

The decision to file charges came after reviews of body camera video and interviews with all of the deputy involved.

The use of force in this situation was not justified. I would love to be able to defend them.
