Weston McKennie is looking at a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining a broken left foot in Tuesday's draw against Villarreal.

Multiple sources with direct knowledge of the injury confirmed to ESPN that the player suffered two broken bones in his left foot and will be out for 8 to 12 weeks.

The injury occurred in the 80th minute of the first leg of the round-of-16 tie when Pervis Estupinan delivered a heavy challenge on McKennie, forcing the U.S. international to be immediately substituted.

At a critical time, the injury comes at a critical time. A key figure in manager Max Allegri's plans, the player has been in fine form for several months.

The U.S. men's national team is trying to qualify for the World Cup in 2022. Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica are the teams that will be playing in the last round of qualification.

The U.S. is in second place in the final round of World Cup qualification, behind Mexico. The U.S. has the most difficult run-in of the teams, from which the top three will automatically qualify, while the fourth-place team will progress to the Intercontinental Playoff in June.
