The second day of in-person meetings between Major League Baseball and the MLBPA produced little progress towards a new collective bargaining agreement while the league viewed the day as a step back.
The union asked for more in their minimum salary structure after they cut down on their proposal for players to enter arbitration after two years.
The union wanted $30,000 a year for the deal, instead of the minimum salary raise of $25,000. Since the Super 2 issue is not something the league will be interested in, they viewed the combination of tweaks moving away from an agreement not towards one. The union can ask for any amount above the 22 percent who enter the system currently, but they won't get it because the league doesn't have the votes.

A group of players and league officials met for three hours on Tuesday. The sides met together and then on their own, but little came out of the day. For the second time in two weeks, the union shot down the idea of using a federal mediator after the league brought it up.
Neither side made a new proposal regarding the competitive balance tax. If one side can come up with a new idea or offer, it will likely be the game-changer.
A new model was created by Tuesday's tweaking of the minimum salary structure by the union. The minimum for the first year would be $775,000. It would go up to $850,000 in Year 2, $850,000 in Year 3, $850,000 in Year 4 and $850,000 in Year 5 of the deal. The starting minimum is $630,000.
Spring training is on hold until a new collective bargaining agreement is reached, and the sides will meet again on Wednesday. There is a deadline to play on opening day.
The players need four weeks of spring training to be ready for the season.
