  • The flight attendant union believes the mask mandate will be extended.

  • It would end on March 18.

  • There has been an increase in violence on planes.

According to the country's largest union of flight attendants, the federal government's mask mandate for airplanes and other methods of travel will likely be extended.

Flight attendants from companies like United Airlines and Delta Air Lines are represented by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA.

We have every expectation that the mask mandate will be extended. The union told the outlet that the youngest passengers don't have access to the vaccine.

The federal mandate is set to end on March 18. The federal government has yet to indicate any plans for extending the mandate, though it was first established in February of 2021.

The mandates were set to expire a few weeks before the previous extensions were announced.

CNN analyzed Federal Aviation Administration data and found that the most violent year on record on airplanes was in 2021. The majority of the reports were related to masks.

Two American Airlines planes had to be diverted in February because of disruptive passengers. A flight attendant had to subdue a person who tried to open an airplane door with a coffee pot. Two passengers were removed from a Delta flight for being disruptive. It would be a complex process to create a no-fly list, though stories like these have likely prompted discussion.

The fate of mask mandates was not definitive by other unions. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents about 22,000 employees of American Airlines, said it was fine with the extension, but hoped it would come where the mask mandates would be.
