Donald Trump praised Russian President Vladimir Putin for sending troops into Ukraine to support the Russian-backed rebels. In an appearance on the right-wing talk radio program, Trump applauded the Russian dictator.

He said that the decision by Putin to officially recognize the provinces and authorize the use of Russian military personnel was genius. How smart is that? He is going to be a peacekeeper. On our southern border, we could use that. That is the strongest peace force I have ever seen. I have never seen so many army tanks. They are going to keep peace.

Trump has a long-standing admiration for Putin. He wondered if the Russian autocrat would attend his Miss Universe pageant in Moscow and if the two would become best friends. In the following years, Trump spoke highly of Putin's strategic ability, noted the strongman's intention to rebuild the Russian Empire, and defended Putin's habit of killing dissidents and journalists.

The recent move by Putin is considered to be an assault on Ukraine's sovereignty. The announcement is a serious escalation that kills the Minsk accords, which set out a series of military and political steps designed to resolve the status of the two regions and end the conflict there.

It's not clear what Trump wants the military to do on the border.

Trump claimed that Russia would have been less aggressive if he were still in the White House.

The former president said that the guy was very savvy. I know him very well. This wouldn't have happened with us. I was not thinkable when I was in office. This would not have happened. There is a guy that says he is going to declare a big portion of Ukraine independent.

During the 2016 campaign, Trump encouraged Russia to hack into the campaign email system of his opponent, Hillary Clinton, in order to help him win. He sided with Russia over the U.S. intelligence agencies.

Trump claimed that President Biden did not respond to the Russian aggression.

Trump said that this is pretty savvy. There was no response at all. They didn't have one for that. It is very sad. Very sad.

On Tuesday, the United States imposed new economic sanctions.

At the White House on Tuesday, press secretary Jen Psaki was asked about Trump's comments.

We try not to take advice from anyone who praises President Putin and his military strategy, Psaki said, before noting how Trump had sided with Russia when it annexed the Crimean Peninsula.

Trump asked Zelensky to investigate Biden because he wanted to weaken his opponent. The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office says that the Trump administration's withholding of congressionally approved aid to Ukraine is illegal. That resulted in Trump being impeached.

It was not Russia that interfered in the election, as Trump claimed without evidence, and at odds with all the evidence gathered by the U.S. intelligence officials. This was done in order to frame Russia. One senior government official who spoke to the Washington Post said that Putin had told them what Trump was going to do with the sources.
