Adios, Qmiles, and hello, Avios.

Today is a big day if you follow airline loyalty. The change to a loyalty points currency is happening soon.

It could be the beginning of fascinating times as airlines harness their loyalty programs to emerge from the last few years.

We have some answers, so here is what we know so far!

Qatar Airways Adopting Avios Currency

Points are similar to cash. You can spend them in more ways than ever, from sporting events to stunning hotel nights, and of course, luxury flights and flight discounts.

In March of 2022, the airline will swap points for the currency of their choice.

“The transition from Qmiles to Avios marks a ground-breaking new era for Privilege Club, enabling our loyal members to participate in the most compelling loyalty network and the largest portfolio of partners in the industry.”

Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker

The current Qmiles currency earned when people participate in banking, travel, retail, flying, dining and other daily activities will be swapped into the new currency of Avios at a 3:1 ratio.

Thanks to increased reach and partnerships, the balances of the Privilege Club will not change. The Privilege Club Qmiles will soon be 100,000.

The British Airways Executive Club, AerLingus, Iberia and Vueling are just a few of the airlines that have supported IAG Loyalty.

“Qatar Airways have recognised the power of Avios. By adopting Avios they will be able to offer their customers a wider range of benefits and support their business development ambitions.

It’s an exciting step for IAG Loyalty as we extend our leadership in loyalty, increase Avios’ global reach, and build out our partnership strategy even further.”Adam Daniels, CEO of IAG Loyalty

What We Know So Far

Not all that much. For now, we know that the Privilege Club is changing to fuel its travel rewards. That is a major change in the space and could signal that other airlines are looking to strengthen their loyalty currencies.

Anything is possible down the line.

It's widely expected that there will be a currency exchange between frequent flyer programs and their partners in the future.

This is a big change and it has exciting implications all over the place. Time will tell how they shake out. It is officially a thing.

When you think you have seen it all, British Airways can surprise you. British Airways believes that loyalty programs have no value and can be changed without notice.

The best practices in points don't make sense. Why would someone earn miles from a Hong Kong based loyalty program if they are flying on British Airways or other Oneworld airlines in Europe or the USA? There are many reasons. AsiaMiles is intriguing.

The search for points is over. You may have got the British Airways 2 for 1 Companion voucher from Chase or Amex, but that doesn't mean you have an actual seat on a plane. That is often the hardest part. Finding availability.
