Donald Trump praised Putin in an interview on Tuesday, describing the Russian president as smart and genius.

Two-thirds of the territory of the Ukrainian republic of Luhansk and Donetsk are still under the control of the Ukrainians, according to Trump.

I went in yesterday and saw a television screen and thought it was genius. Putin says it is independent. When asked about the news, Trump said that he would be a peacekeeper.

Trump baselessly claimed that the reason the Russian president chose to invade Ukraine is because he had a better relationship with Putin than President Joe Biden did.

I knew Putin very well. I got along well with him. He liked me. Trump said he liked him because he was a tough cookie and had a lot of pride. But the way he loves his country, you know? He loves his country.

Trump repeated his false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him when asked what went wrong with Ukraine.

What went wrong was a rigged election and a candidate that shouldn't be there and a man that has no idea of what he's doing. I was not thinkable when I was in office. This would not have happened.

Trump said that the US should use military force to make sure the US-Mexico border is secure because of longstanding conservative grievances about immigration.

We could use that on our southern border. That peace force is the strongest I have ever seen. There were more tanks than I have ever seen. No, but think of it. I know a guy who is very smart.

Trump brought up the US-Mexico border when he was asked if he was concerned about the US becoming involved in a conflict in Ukraine.

He said he would rather see the US send soldiers to the southern border.

The US has not responded forcefully enough to the Russia-Ukraine conflict according to Trump.

It is a joke compared to what the other side does. He sent 3,000 troops. I heard 3000 troops this morning. I would like to see our southern border protected and they are handling Ukraine badly.

When he was president, Trump said that Putin always wanted to invade the neighboring country.

I knew that he wanted to go to Ukraine. I used to talk to him about it. I told you you couldn't do it. I could see that he wanted it. I used to ask him. Trump said that they used to talk about it for a long time.

Domestic criticism was often caused by Trump's dynamic with Putin. At a time when US-Russia relations were at their worst point since the Cold War, Trump repeatedly praised and defended Putin.

In the most famous example of this, Trump appeared to side with Putin over the US intelligence community on the subject of Russian election interference when the two leaders met. After facing bipartisan criticism in Washington, Trump walked back his statements. He continued to shower Putin with flattery after that.

With Russia engaging in what Biden described as the beginning of an invasion of Ukraine, Trump is once again praising the Russian president while bashing the American one.

The fact that Russia was fueling an ongoing war against Ukrainian forces in the Donbas throughout Trump's time in the White House ignores the fact that Putin moved to invade Ukraine because he's no longer in office. Trump was impeached for withholding $400 million in military aid from Ukraine as it contended with the conflict against Kremlin-backed rebels. The war has claimed over 13 thousand lives and displaced 1.5 million.

The congressionally-approved military aid to Ukraine was frozen by Trump as he pressured the Ukrainian President to launch investigations into Biden and his son over baseless allegations of corruption. He wanted Zelensky to investigate a bogus conspiracy theory that the presidential election was interfered in by Russia.

The top Russia advisor on the National Security Council under the Trump administration told CNN that the president paved the way for Putin to invade Ukraine.

Hill, who was a key witness in the first impeachment of Trump, said that he sent a message to Putin that Ukraine is a playground.

Hill said there was no Team America for Trump. Not once. Not for a second.

Bill Taylor, a former US ambassador to Ukraine who also testified in the first impeachment of Donald Trump, told Chuck Todd on Sunday that he believed Putin was moving against Ukraine because he was running out of time.

When President Trump was in office, Putin thought he had more time. He is running out of time. Ukraine is moving inexorably to Europe, away from Russia, because of his actions. Taylor thinks that he is running out of time. His economy is not in good shape, and it will go down from here.
