McConnell said at an event in Kentucky that he did not find Biden's vow to put women on the Supreme Court "inappropriate", likening it to when Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump promised to put women on the Supreme Court.

Several GOP senators disagree with Biden's move, and unlike other points of contention in the party, such as accepting the results of the 2020 presidential election, the view crosses ideological lines.

Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who objected to the 2020 election results, has been joined by more establishment conservatives.

McConnell is one of a few senators who have pushed back on the opposition.

McConnell said that he did not think that was inappropriate.

The deadline for Biden to name his nominee to replace Justice Stephen Breyer, who will retire after 25 years on the Supreme Court, is the end of February. Democrats are united in their support for whichever candidate Biden chooses, which would make it easy for the Senate to confirm the nominee. The Supreme Court confirmation process does not have a 60-vote threshold, which has been the death knell for many Democratic legislative priorities. Some top Republicans think it would be foolish to mount serious pushback against the nominee since the court is not changing and there are concerns about the effect of opposing the first Black female nominee to the court ahead of the elections.

What To Watch For

South Carolina U.S. District Court Judge J. Childs and California Supreme Court Justice Leondra Kruger are thought to be the most likely choices for Biden's nominee. Jackson is the overwhelming favorite to get the nod and she has a better than 60% chance of being nominated, according to PredictIt.

Cruz joined Republicans in slamming Biden's vow to name a Black woman to the Supreme Court.
