Windle is a Wordle clone that was created by Dialup.net and was designed to run on Windows 3.1 and the early 90's PC hardware.

Windle was built and run on period-appropriate hardware with period-appropriate tools to maximize its authenticity, despite the fact that you could run Windows 3.1 and its apps on modern hardware. Running on the original hardware helped expose issues that may not.

Playing Windle works great in a virtual Windows 98 SE environment, just like the other Microsoft Entertainment Pack games.

Windle was designed to fit in with the Microsoft Entertainment Pack games. I tested it with a Windows 98 Second Edition installation and found it to run well in older versions of the Windows operating system.

If you want to run Windle on a modern version of Windows, Dialup.net has a 32-bit build that will run on Windows 10.

Windle is not the only retro clone that exists, the game has also been converted to the original Game Boy and various Palm PDAs. Hardware limitations keep these ports from using the same dictionary andUI as the web-based version, but the core gameplay is simple enough that even the Game Boy can get the basics across.
