Donald Trump released his longest statement yet on the crisis in Ukraine on Tuesday, slamming what he called weak sanctions from the Biden Administration while avoiding direct condemnation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump said in a statement that he knows Putin very well and that he would never do anything like what he is doing now.

The ex-president did not say what he thought the penalty should be, but he blamed the president for weak sanctions given the situation.

Russia has become very rich due to the rising price of oil, which appears to blame the administration for the spike despite broad global supply and demand issues.

Before Tuesday, Trump hadn't released a statement about Ukraine since January 24, when he sent a two sentence message saying: "What's happening with Russia and Ukraine would never happen under the Trump Administration." Not even a possibility!

During his presidency, Trump was criticized by members of his own party for seeming to have a close relationship with Putin.

Putin ordered troops to move into eastern Ukraine after he recognized two pro-Russian states as independent countries. Biden signed an executive order banning new American investment in the two regions that Russia recognized. The European Union and the United Kingdom imposed additional sanctions on Russian financial services.

What To Watch For

White House deputy national security advisor Jon Finer said Tuesday that the U.S. believes that Putin's actions mark the beginning of an invasion.
