  • According to The New York Times, Justice Clarence Thomas had ties to the organizers of a January 6, 2021, rally.

  • The Times reported on the connections with people who wanted to overturn the election results.

  • Thomas was on the board of a group that wanted to challenge the election results.

According to a New York Times Magazine report, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas had ties to the organizers of the January 6, 2021, rallies in support of President Donald Trump.

The role Thomas played was previously unreported by the Times. The Washington Post reported last month that Thomas shared a post on January 6 before the violence broke out. She wrote that God bless each of you standing up.

According to The Times, Thomas played a peacemaking role between the rally organizers so that there wouldn't be any division around January 6. A crowd of Trump supporters descended on the Capitol, clashed with law enforcement officials, and interrupted the 2020 election certification before the Ellipse rally took place.

The way it was presented to me was that the different groups were coming together for a single mission on January 6. The Times noted that other rally organizers disagreed with the account of Thomas.

The Times reported that Thomas was on the advisory board of Turning Point USA, a conservative nonprofit that provided buses for the rallygoers.

Thomas is connected to people who wanted to change the results of the election. The lawyer who wrote a memo about how Vice President Mike Pence could overturn the election results is a close friend of the couple and Clerked for Clarence Thomas at the Supreme Court.

Steve Bannon, a one-time White House chief strategist for Trump, endorsed efforts to challenge the election results. According to The Times, a group called Groundswell was founded by Ginni Thomas.

According to The Times, Thomas was on the board of the Council for National Policy and CNP Action, which was responsible for circulating a document after the presidential election. The document urged members to challenge the results of the election.

In December 2020, CNP Action shared a newsletter with a report called "Five States and the Election Irregularities and Issues", which featured five swing states where Trump was attempting to overturn the results. According to The Times, the newsletter pointed to a historical precedent for Congress to count a slate of electors different from that certified by the Governor of the state.

  • The Supreme Court on Tuesday ended Donald Trump's request to block the release of White House records sought by the congressional panel investigating last year's deadly attack on the Capitol by a mob of his supporters. The court's decision to formally reject Trump's appeal follows its Jan. 19 order that led to the documents being handed over to the House of Representatives investigative committee by the federal agency that stores government and historical records. The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld a lower court ruling that Trump had no right to challenge the decision to allow the records to be handed over.
