  • An amendment to Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill could force schools to exclude gay and trans children.

  • It would require teachers to inform parents of their child&s sexual orientation or gender identity within 6 weeks of learning.

  • Florida House Bill 1557 prohibits discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels.

The "Don't Say Gay" bill would require schools to tell a child's parents if they are not straight.

The bill was initially opposed for barring school districts from encouraging discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students.

If the school became aware of the child's sexual orientation or gender identity through counseling or other services, the bill required staff to out the students to their parents.

A new amendment filed by one of the bill's co-sponsors requires the school to give the child's parents a plan to keep the information secret within 6 weeks.

The amendment states that the school must facilitate the meeting in a way that protects the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of the student.

The original legislation was denounced by President Joe Biden on February 8, 2022.

Biden wants every member of the LGBTQI+ community to know that they are loved and accepted just as they are.

Chasten Buttigieg, the husband of Pete Buttigieg lambasted the bill in January. The legislation will kill kids, according to a survey from theTrevor Project.

The bill is going to be voted on by the Florida House.
