According to Fitzgerald Police Chief William Smallwood Jr., E.J. Lightsey is in stable condition after being shot multiple times in his hometown.
According to Smallwood, his officers responded to reports of a shooting at a park in Fitzgerald. One person was found lying on the ground. Lightsey was already taken to a hospital by acquaintances.
Lightsey was transferred to a hospital in Georgia. Lightsey was shot in the back and shoulder. The incident seemed to be related to gangs. Lightsey told police he was in the park working out when he was shot.
Smallwood said that Lightsey was picked up and taken to the hospital. We are trying to piece it together.
Smallwood said a detective talked to one of Lightsey's relatives who reported that he was doing well.
No arrests have been made.
Fitzgerald High School won a Class 2A state championship with the help of Lightsey. He was named the Class 2A state defensive player of the year by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
