The design of Sony's next-generation headset was revealed last March, after it was announced in February 2021, and it will be called PSVR2 in January.
The new design features a similar white-and-black color scheme as the PS 5, and while it features the same broad design as the original PS VR, the new model also brings a few enhancements, including a lens adjustment. Similar to the PS 5 and its dualsense controller, the PS VR2 has tiny textured PlayStation icons hidden on the front and back bands of the headset.
It has been over five years since the original PSVR came out, and it is definitely due for an upgrade. The experience is last-gen and you need a special adapter to use it with the PS5. Sony has been giving out free virtual reality games to members of the PS Plus, but without an updated headset to go with the PS5.
The headset supports a field of view of over 100 degrees, and it connects to the PS5 with a single cable.
The original affordable virtual reality headset required neither a gaming PC nor additional gear. It only got more affordable after it turned existing PS4 game consoles into a modestly capable rig.
The PSVR was a part of the first wave of consumer headsets, and has had numerous successors with improvements in optical quality, field of view, and general immersion since then. The original PSVR only allowed you to walk around a tiny space in front of your PS4 and interact with virtual worlds with a pair of wands, which was a far cry from the juggling you can do today.
It was risky to turn your body away from the TV or else it might lose track of your hands, because of the PSVR's rudimentary single-camera tracking system.
Sony has to compete with headsets like the HP Reverb G2 and the Valve Index. Since the first PSVR and its controllers, Sony has to prove that it can still provide a compelling experience, and games to go with it. It has already announced one game for the system, which it says is built specifically for PS VR2 and will open the doors for players to go deeper into the world of Horizon.
While today's reveal has answered the biggest question about the PS VR2, there is still a lot we don't know about the headset, like its price or release date.
