The Four Seasons Madrid opened in September 2020 and we spent two nights there. This is a really special property, and instantly became one of my five favorite city hotels.
I like hotels that are historic and have a sense of place, but are modern and have all the modern amenities you would hope for from a luxury hotel. That is what the Four Seasons Madrid has to offer. This is the only non-points property we're planning on staying at during this trip, so if this review doesn't interest some omaat regulars, I totally understand.
The nightly rate for a base room at the Four Seasons Madrid was 900 for our dates in February. The pricing is in line with what you'll find at Madrid's other top hotels. A fourth night free is one of the offers the hotel has.
The best way to book a Four Seasons hotel is through a travel advisor. You pay the same rate when booking through Preferred Partner, but you will receive additional perks.
Four Seasons offers a variety of promotions, including advance purchase rates, free night offers, and more. Booking through programs like Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts is not as good as booking through the Four Seasons Preferred partner. Why?
You can get all of these perks if you book through an eligible travel advisor. Ford and his team don't charge booking fees for Four Seasons properties.
Ford got a travel agent rate for us. All opinions are mine.
Between Puerta del Sol and Barrio de las Letras is where the Four Seasons Madrid is located. We were able to see most of Madrid's sights on foot because Ford is a big stepper. The hotel is close to Madrid Airport and a taxi costs 30 euro.
The exterior of the Four Seasons Madrid feels historic and well maintained. That is for good reason. The seven historic buildings that make up the hotel were built between 1887 and 1891.
This used to be the headquarters of a Spanish bank. The building was empty for years after it was purchased by the bank. The building was sold in 2012 and plans were made to turn it into a luxury hotel. The building was transformed into a hotel from 2013 to 2020.
The Four Seasons Madrid opened eight years ago. It's a pretty time consuming and costly investment.
The Four Seasons Madrid has a grand lobby, which spans two floors, and has maintained most of the elements of the space from back when it was a bank headquarters. There is plenty of seating in the lobby area, which is home to the El Patio bar, which serves drinks all day.
The decorative skylight above the entire lobby is something you have to love.
The hotel has thousands of original artifacts being restored, as well as hundreds of pieces of art throughout, including two big KAWS figures in the lobby. There are fresh flowers that are always refreshed.
After our mess at the airport, we appreciated the efficient and friendly check-in experience.
We took the elevators up to the second floor, where our room was located, with the keys in hand.
There are also elevators and a spiral staircase.
The hotel hallways had a bit more charm than the Ritz-Carlton Turks and Caicos.
The room we were assigned was a one bedroom suite.
The suite was not what we were expecting, but in a good way. A suite with two separate rooms all on the same level is a one bedroom suite. The one bedroom suites at the Four Seasons Madrid are more like duplex suites, and this is one of the best hotel rooms I have ever stayed in.
There was a closet to the right and a half bathroom in the room.
The upper level of the room had a bedroom. Four Seasons has the most comfortable beds in the industry, and this included a king size bed, a wall-mounted TV, a desk and a seat with an ottoman.
The bathroom behind the bedroom had double sinks, a soaking tub, a walk-in shower, and a toilet.
The only thing I can critique about the room is that there wasn't a rainforest shower head, but just one shower head on the wall, and then a handheld one as well.
It is always a treat to have toiletries from Hermes.
If you are traveling with small children, you might want to consider one of their other suites. Since the ceilings in the room were really high, it was cool to have a duplex suite like this.
There was a couch, two chairs, and a dining table in the living area.
There was a minibar at the far end of the living room. This had an espresso machine and tea.
A variety of drinks and snacks were available for purchase.
vermouth, nuts, olives, cheese, and cold cuts were included in the welcome amenity. There were two heart-shaped chocolates.
There were two outdoor areas in the room. There was an enclosed terrace on one side of the living room and a fully open terrace on the other side.
The room had fast and included wi-fi, and was clean twice daily. There was a lot of attention to detail. A cleaning cloth with a picture of the hotel was left on my laptop.
We asked to see some other rooms after getting a great upgrade. The smallest rooms in Madrid are 484 square feet, which makes The Four Seasons the largest standard room in the city. Some pictures of a premier twin room are still very nice.
All rooms at the Four Seasons have double sinks, a bathtub, a walk-in shower, and a partitioned off toilet, which is a nice feature, since it's something you'll usually only find in suites.
The signature dining spot of the Four Seasons is the Dani Restaurant. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served at the restaurant. There is a bar area and a separate restaurant in this space. The restaurant serves Spanish and Andalusian cuisine.
The restaurant has lots of seating indoors and an outdoor terrace with great views, but winter isn't the best time to enjoy this.
We had breakfast in the restaurant both mornings, and you can find the menu here. We had a hot beverage, juice, buffet, and one dish from the menu on both mornings. The buffet isn't huge, but it's wonderful presented and almost everything is homemade.
The drinks were great, including green juice, carrot juice, and cappuccino.
I had the toast on multi-grain bread both mornings.
Ford had a breakfast with eggs and hollandaise sauce.
The hotel has complimentary coffee, tea, and pastries in the lobby each morning.
We were able to get a last minute reservation at the restaurant on the day we arrived in Spain. We started with drinks in the bar area, and you can find the menu here.
Ford had a Chueca cocktail with pisco, purple corn, and coriander, while I ordered the Austrias cocktail with tequila, pineapple, and green chartreuse. Both were delicious, and were served with cashews and olives.
You can find the menu at the restaurant where we had dinner. The menu at the restaurant is designed for sharing, so each course was brought out one-by-one. We enjoyed everything we tried.
The green gazpacho was highly recommended. The dried tomato, green bell pepper, and baby shrimp tartar were in this. That thing in the middle is not a tomato.
We had the red tuna and charcoaled avocados.
We had the red tuna with yellow bell peppers, lime, and black olive.
We had the calamari with almonds, fried basil, and chili.
The rossini burger had french fries and foie gras.
The food was amazing, and we had an amazing dining experience.
We checked out the lobby bar of the hotel on the second day of our visit. You can find the menu here, which includes coffee, cocktails, afternoon tea, and snacks.
Ford had vermouth and I ordered a gin and tonic.
We tried a couple of snacks, including a tofu and artichoke dish.
There is a food and beverage outlet on the first floor of the building. It is open in the evening from 7PM and you can find the menu here. You might not expect a historic Four Seasons property to have a hip bar with a DJ and a ridiculously cool vibe, but that is exactly what this is.
There are at least six different rooms at the bar.
The drinks were topnotch in terms of presentation and taste. This place had a fun vibe even on a Tuesday night after February 14th.
The Four Seasons Madrid has a four level spa that is exceptional for a city hotel. The gym is located here. We didn't get any spa treatments, but you can find the menu here.
The hotel's gym is one level up from the main spa reception and has a good variety of both cardio and weight equipment. You can visit the gym outside of the hours of 7AM until 9PM, but you can't work out there if you're jetlagged.
Coffee, water, and fresh fruit were available in the gym.
The hotel has an indoor pool area. A 14 meter pool was the center of this.
The pool had warmer water and jets.
There was a steam room, sauna, and showering facilities.
Even in markets that might not be known for attentive service, Four Seasons does a great job. The employees at the Four Seasons were friendly and fun to work with.
While we are talking about service, I have to say that Four Seasons chat feature is my favorite service feature of any major hotel group in the world. You can use the chat feature as soon as you make a booking, and unlike other hotel groups, they respond quickly and well.
The concierge team was extremely helpful in securing us reservations and setting up our coronaviruses tests after we had trouble getting tested at the airport.
We had drinks at the restaurant before dinner. They hadn't arrived after 15 minutes after we ordered drinks. We asked a different server about the status of our drinks, and they showed up a minute later. The manager apologized and insisted on comping the drinks because of how long we had to wait.
The Four Seasons Madrid is one of the best hotels in the city. This hotel is a 130 year old building and has been restored in a way that pays homage to its history while still offering all the amenities you would hope for in a modern luxury hotel.
The Four Seasons has excellent food and beverage outlets, great rooms, and a beautiful spa complex. You won't be disappointed if you visit Madrid and swing at the Four Seasons.
