The ability for users to limit their daily usage to less than 30 minutes has been removed.
Those who want to cut down on their social media usage can use the option to set a daily time limit in the app. Users used to be able to select a time limit of ten or five minutes a day, but that is no longer possible.
After the latest app update, the menu card pops up and tells users how long they should stay, with a new minimum of 30 minutes, and the radio button next to the maximum of three hours.
The popup says the user can keep their limit if they want, but an additional popup on the activity page says the 10-minute limit is no longer supported.
The quietly implemented change, which appears to run counter to the claim that it wants to empower users to make intentional decisions about how much time they spend on the app, has not been commented on by eitherInstagram or parent company Meta.
The change comes a few months after the introduction of the "Take a Break" feature that allows users to opt into receiving periodic reminders if they have been on the app for a long time. When Take a Break was being tested, Adam Mosseri said that you know what's best for you when it comes to how you use the app.
Meta slashed its guidance for the first quarter of 2022, after disappointing quarterly earnings were reported earlier this month.
Meta blamed its weaker performance on the steps taken by Apple to improve user privacy by making it harder for platforms and apps to track users across other apps and websites for ad targeting purposes.
