The certification of the Nord Stream 2 gas line will be halted by Germany after President Putin said that Russian troops would move into east Ukraine to act as peacekeepers.
The Chancellor of Germany said that Germany would not accept the recognition of the two self-proclaimed, pro-Russian regions in the Donbas region of east Ukraine.
The $11 billion project to double the amount of gas flowing from Russia to Germany was completed late last year. The German regulators had yet to give the green light to open.
In the course of a few hours on Monday evening, Putin said Russia would recognize the independence of two self-proclaimed and pro-Russian republics in eastern Ukraine.
Many fear that the sending of troops into the so-called Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic is a sign that Russia is getting ready to invade eastern Ukraine.
