Stephen Robinson has been appointed as the new manager of St Mirren.

The former Motherwell boss signed a two-and-a-half-year deal to succeed Jim Goodwin.

The 47-year-old resigned from his post at Fir Park after becoming the manager of Morecambe.

Robinson said it was an honor that St Mirren had come in.

It came out of the blue and when I spoke to the guys at the club it really impressed me. There are exciting times to come.

With the foundations that have already been built by Jim, it is up to me to take them on.

Robinson will take charge for the first time when St Mirren travel to Dundee on Wednesday.

Steven Naismith, the youth coach at Hearts, had been given permission to speak to the Paisley side, as had Scott Brown, the captain of Aberdeen.

Robinson left Morecambe, who are making their debut in England's third tier, in the bottom half of the league having gone five games without a victory.

The former Northern Ireland international takes charge of a side sitting seventh in the Scottish top flight, but just one point off fourth-spotted Hibs with a game in hand.

He was an assistant to Ian Baraclough with Motherwell and also assisted the national team boss.

After just seven months as manager, he left and returned to Fir Park to lead his side to the League Cup and Scottish Cup finals, but lost to Celtic each time.

Robinson left Motherwell at the end of 2020 after almost four years at the club, with the club in danger of being demoted.
