The US ambassador to the United Nations said on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants the world to return to a time when the Russian Empire ruled.

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield made comments during a UN Security Council meeting. The West condemned Putin's announcement that Russia would recognize the two regions as independent states and ordered troops into them.

Thomas-Greenfield said that Russia's actions were an attack on Ukraine's sovereignty and a violation of international law.

Russian troops will be placed in these regions. He refers to them as peacekeepers. This is not true. She said that the move was clearly the basis for Russia's attempt to create a pretext for a further invasion of Ukraine.

Russia has a claim to all territories from the Russian Empire, which was before the Soviet Union, according to Putin.

All of Ukraine is included. It also includes the country of Finland. It also includes Georgia and Moldova. The countries that are included are: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. There are three countries: Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Lithuania. There are two countries, Latvia and Estonia. She said it included parts of Poland and Turkey.

Putin wants the world to travel back in time to a time when empires ruled the world. The rest of the world is moving in a different direction. Thomas-Greenfield said that it is not 1919.

The security council meeting was called after a spokesman for the UN Secretary-General said he was concerned by Russia's actions in eastern Ukraine.

The White House said it was prepared to issue more severe economic measures in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
