The former national security adviser warned that the European leader could win control of the country without sparking a large-scale conflict or invasion and that Russian President Vladimir Putin could be dragging out the Ukraine crisis in a campaign of "classic brinkmanship".

In an interview with John Catsimatidis on WABC 770 AM, the National Security Adviser said that Putin could invade Ukraine, but it depended on how successful he was in achieving his larger strategic interests.

The Russians are playing a very diplomatic game, which primarily centers on fracturing NATO, according to the National Security Adviser.

Concerns of a potential invasion of Ukraine have mounted for months amid a steady Russian military build up at the border. There have been reports of violence in eastern Ukraine, where Russian-backed rebels are fighting the Ukrainian military.

On Friday, President Biden said he was convinced that Putin had decided to invade Ukraine, and on Saturday, Nancy Pelosi warned of sanctions.

The world should not let its guard down, as Putin could be trying to get Ukraine for free, according to former US ambassador to the UN JohnBolton.

The administration is so consumed by the reaction to the withdrawal from Afghanistan that it is overhyping the potential attack, he said.

The former national security adviser said that Putin has the upper hand in the situation because of themomentum and initiative on his side. He argued NATO and the U.S. should put pressure on Putin to stop the invasion, including by canceling the Nord Stream 2 project.

"We should have been doing this weeks ago, and we need to increase the pressure on Russia now."
