Newport Beach, California. A police helicopter crashed nose first along the Southern California coast, killing one officer, after the pilot reported mechanical issues.

The Huntington Beach officer who was injured in the crash was released from the hospital Sunday morning. The police spokeswoman told the Register that officials are optimistic about the officer's recovery.

The police chief said that Nicholas Vella, a 14-year veteran, died in the crash. Vella leaves behind a wife and daughter.

The two officers were dispatched to the Newport Beach area to respond to a fight. There was a plane crash in Newport Bay between Lido Isle and the Balboa Peninsula on Saturday. The officers were pulled out of the helicopter by boaters, which was upside down in the water.

The pilot made a brief call to report that the helicopter was experiencing mechanical issues, before calling again to say that they were going to crash.

Simpson said that the helicopter made a nose-down descent into the water, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The helicopter was damaged in the water on Sunday.

The cause of the crash will be determined at the end of the investigation, which could take up to 18 months.

It wasn't immediately clear who was in charge of the helicopter.

Dozens of officers and first responders formed a line Saturday night outside the hospital to honor Vella as he was taken to the coroner's office.

The chief said that Vella was dedicated to his job and was doing what he loved doing.

This is a difficult night for all of us and I would ask for your prayers and support as we support our officers and their families.

The Huntington Beach Police Department has a helicopter that is used 24 hours a day. The two other aircraft will not leave the air until the investigation is complete.
