Anchorage Daily News, Alaska

The school principal in the North Slope village of Point Lay was fired after the images of a coaster he designed went public on Facebook.

The coaster had the logo of the North Slope Borough School District in the center and three children in traditional Alaska Native attire. You are alive and well. Time for a drink.

Reached by phone, the fired principal of Point Lay's Kali School said he was making a coaster in one of the classrooms on the evening of January 26 when a school custodian saw him and took photos of the design.

The custodian sent the photos to Anausuk, who posted them on Facebook. Many of the commenters on the post said the phrases were offensive.

The principal is using our symbol with the picture of the Natives. Our people are aware of the importance of respect. This is not right and disrespectful to our people.

The phrases were not directed at the people of the North Slope or the school, but at the school district's administration.

I am horrified by how it was interpreted. I did not intend it to be a slight against the Native people.

The school district decided thatStirling was incompetent to lead a school and fired him.

David Camp, director of human resources at the district, wrote in an email that there was a personnel issue and he had no comment.

He worked in Alaska education for more than 20 years and was a principal for 15. He worked in Delta Junction High School after retiring from his career in villages around Bethel.

After working in rural Alaska for a while, Stirling became the principal of Kali school. He tried to treat everyone with respect every day.

He made the coasters because he was upset with the school district's policy of charging rent to long-term substitute teachers. He said that Kali School lost two teachers in January because of the policy.

He said that he never had more than 40% of his staff in the building.

The coaster was made for a friend who was leaving the district. What Stirling did was inappropriate according to Ferreira.

He said that the North Slope School District does not need educators and leaders who will make negative things out of school supplies.

After hours, Stirling came to the school and used the school's laser wood engraver to make the coaster, not expecting anyone else to be in the room or building.

After seeing the image on Facebook, Stirling decided to come to Utqia. He said that the school district staff conducted an investigation, held three meetings and decided to fire him.

After the investigation was over, Stirling apologized to the North Slope community.

I never meant the image to be public, but I should have done what I told students to do.

Some community members did not like the apology. The letter came because his actions became public.

I think he only apologized because what he did was exposed. If we didn't know what he did, what else would he have done to disrespect us?
