The Pittsburgh quarterback job is up for grabs after Ben Roethlisberger's retirement.

Kevin Colbert gave Mason a vote of confidence.

Colbert said that Mason would be the starter if the season started today.

After Roethlisberger tested positive for COVID-19 a day before the Week 9 game against the Detroit Lions, the decision was made to start Rudolph. In a game that ended in a tie, Rudolph completed 30 of 50 attempts for 242 yards and one touchdown. After Roethlisberger's season-ending elbow injury, Rudolph started eight games. The second-year quarterback finished the season with 13 touchdown and nine turnovers.

Matt Canada was hired as quarterbacks coach for the following season by the Steelers. Mike Sullivan was brought in to work with the group after Canada was promoted to offensive coordinator.

Colbert said he was comfortable that Mason had won more games than he had lost as a starter. You have to prove it over 16 games to be an NFL starter. If that is the case, I am anxious to see that.

Colbert said that he expects the team to tender former first-round pick, and scout-team quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, who spent most of the year as a backup.

Colbert said that they were excited to see what he could provide from competition or as a starter.

The Steelers are not going to stop there.

Colbert said that they will go to camp with four.

Colbert, Art Rooney II and Mike Tomlin have talked about adding to the group with two quarterback spots up for grabs. The team can either take a quarterback with the 20th pick or explore free agency and the trade market.

The draft class of quarterbacks has good quality, but probably not as many as in the past, but it is what it is.

There are good players in this group and they all have different skills. The majority of them were at the Senior Bowl, and they are all different. I know some of them will be starting quarterbacks, and that is exciting.

The top priority for Colbert and the team is to find a plan after Roethlisberger. The general manager is leaving after the draft. Colbert told Rooney II that he would be the general manager in May of 2021, but he might stay around the organization in another role.

Colbert said it was time from a personal standpoint and from a professional standpoint. I encourage our younger scouts to push me in that regard, but the better solution may be outside the organization. We don't know, but I think from a personal point of view, it's time, but even from a professional point of view, we have to be open to trying to stay ahead of the game.

Colbert and Rooney II are interviewing candidates to find Colbert's replacement. The first round of interviews will be conducted by early March, with the second round expected to be completed after the NFL draft. Colbert said that the head coach will have a bigger role in determining the next general manager after the draft.

Seven external candidates and two internal possibilities have been interviewed by the Steelers so far.
