Bobby Hull was no longer serving as a team ambassador.
Hull played for Chicago for 15 years and collected 604 goals and 548 assists. In 2008 he was named an ambassador for the Hawks by Stan Mikita.
The role of team ambassador will be redefined after the deaths of Mikita and Esposito.
The team said in a statement that they agreed earlier this season that Bobby would retire from any official team role.
In 1983, Hull was in the Hockey Hall of Fame and had his No. 9 sweater retired by the Hawks. Hull had a number of troubling episodes off the ice over the years.
In 1986 Hull was convicted of assault on a police officer who tried to break up a fight between him and his wife. He was accused of battery, but that charge was dropped after Deborah told authorities she didn't want to testify against her husband.
During a 2002 show, Hull was accused of abuse by his second wife.
A Russian newspaper reported in 1998 that Hull said Adolf Hitler had some good ideas.
