Major League Soccer has experienced expansion and growth in recent seasons. The Charlotte FC franchise will play its first game on Saturday against D.C. United. You can stream live on Disney+.

There is no "right" way to enter MLS given the whims of ownership and the raft of roster rules. There are some do and don'ts. We guarantee that an expansion club will hoist an MLS Cup in no time.

We don't actually guarantee it. The fans will be happy, and that matters.

Do: Hire the former coach of Barcelona

Atlanta United spent a lot of money on Designated Players in the last year. The club averaged more than 48,000 fans per game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and made the playoffs for the first time in their history.

The Argentine manager who previously headed up the Blaugrana as well as his native national team and Paraguay was Tying everything together. MLS stalwarts like Michael Parkhurst and Jeff Larentowicz, rookies like Julian Gressel, and the South America cohort of Almiron, Villalba, and Pirez are all included in the tapestry. Atlanta won the MLS Cup.

The man walked away to manage Mexico. The ATL hasn't regained its form.

Don't: Scour Scandinavia for your first-ever roster

Vadim was from Brann in Norway. Kadrii arrived from FC Copenhagen. The land of 10,000 lakes is in Sweden. Josh Gatt arrived from Molde. Minnesota United had a 19th-place finish in the league, besting only D.C. United on goal differential.

It is possible for a franchise to focus its recruiting efforts in one geographic region and achieve results, but the Loons proved that is not the case.

Do: Have your new, soccer-specific stadium ready for Year 1

The first season of a team is about winning hearts and minds, not just on the field. Having a place to play that is truly a team's own, a permanent solution, is of paramount importance.

The Banc of California Stadium is what LAFC is. The club had a sellout of 22,000 fans per game. BoC was here to stay despite a disappointing season that ended with a home loss in the first game of the playoffs.

Don't: Skimp on goalkeeping

Taking a fiscally conservative approach to building an expansion roster is not inherently wrong. Not every team in MLS is backed by cash. It is possible for a club to succeed without big-name, big-moneyDesignated Players in the first year. Someone has to keep the ball out of the net. FC Cincinnati didn't pay attention to that.

What lessons will Charlotte FC learn from the expansion teams that have come before it? Charlotte FC

The club finished dead last in post-shot expected goals minus goals allowed. Przemyslaw Tyton and Spencer Richey were two of the worst netminders in the league. While the next year was a bit better (third from the bottom), the team reverted to form as the PSxG +/- was twice as bad as the next closest team with Tyton and new signing Kenneth Vermeer finishing 29th and 30th out of 30 eligible goalkeeper.

That is one way to end up with just 60 points over three seasons.

Do: Be yourself, stick to your plan

Inter Miami joined MLS in 2020. It's too big, actually. Nashville took another route, signing quality but not flashyDPs Randall Leal and Hany Mukhtar, while using the massive amounts of General Allocation Money given to expansion clubs to pull future MLS Defender of the Year Walker from LAFC.

Major League Soccer is here. All 27 teams have live games.

English manager Gary Smith built a side that didn't create many chances and didn't leak goals, but Nashville conceded only 22. The result? A club that exceeded expectations, lost just three times in the final 17 games of the season, won two playoff matches, and took the Columbus Crew into extra-time before falling in the conference semifinals. They did more of the same, tying 18 matches and finishing third in the Eastern Conference.

Rarely pretty, always effective.

Don't: Cheat the system

MLS rules are complex, and it's hard for a fan to keep up with them. A little wiggle room as general managers and technical staffs get up to speed is justified, but it is not allowed to be untruthful about salaries.

Inter Miami reported the salaries of Gonzalez Pirez, Nicolas Figal, and Julian Carranza. MLS fined the club a record $2 million and reduced the amount of allocation dollars the team will receive in the years to come.

The Designated Player rule was designed to get David Beckham into MLS. You would think that Miami shouldn't break that rule, co-owned by David Beckham.

Do: Bring the star power in the right way

There are two words. Mr. Cool can be annoying, but he got that crowd excited.

Matthew McConaughey plays bongo drums on the field during Austin FC's first ever home game.

Austin FC didn't have much to celebrate in its inaugural season, but it will always have the memories of Q2 Stadium. In 20 years, 200,000 Texans will claim they were at the opener. All right, all right.

Don't: Wait until the last minute to finalize your roster

It is not the sentiment one hopes to hear from their head coach two weeks before the start of the season. When asked about the state of his team's roster, Charlotte FC manager Miguel Angel Ramirez said that was exactly what he had said.

Charlotte missed out on securing the services of United States international Paul Arriola, who ended up with FC Dallas, and saw Poland's Kamil Jozwiak get hurt after agreeing to terms.

It is difficult to build a roster from scratch, but it should be possible to know who is going to be on it.
