The Vikings are going to hire WesPhillips to be their offensive coordinator, according to a source.

During the team's Super Bowl run in 2021,Phillips was the passing game coach and tight ends coach. Tyler Higbee set single-season franchise records in receptions (69) and receiving yards (734) by a tight end in the first two seasons of his career. Higbee was the first tight end since 1970 to record four straight games of seven or more catches.

After working for the Cowboys as a quality control coach/offensive assistant,Phillips became an assistant offensive line coach and tight ends coach. The tight ends coach at Washington for four seasons,Phillips had a relationship with O&Connell during the two seasons.

During his news conference on Thursday, O'Connell said that he would call offensive plays during the 2022 season. It is expected that the role thatPhillips will hold in Minnesota will be similar to the one that O'Connell held in Los Angeles. While Sean McVay served as the team's playcaller, O'Connell helped build and develop the team's game plan, which in Minnesota will mirror many of the concepts utilized in the Rams' offense.

"We're doing a lot of things that are simple for us, but maybe a little bit more difficult for a defense to defend." O'Connell said last week.

WadePhillips is the son of a long time NFL head coach and the grandson of a long time Saints coach.

The Vikings already have nine additions to their staff, including assistant head coach Mike Pettine, defensive coordinator Ed Donatell, defensive line coach Chris Rumph, quarterbacks coach Chris O'Hara, and assistant quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson.

The first to report the hiring was the NFL Network.
