It is not the time to laugh about Romelu Lukaku, according to Thomas Tuchel.

The lowest number of touches any player has had in a 90 minute appearance in the premier league since at least 2003 was seven by Romelu Lukaku in Saturday's win over Crystal Palace.

He is in the spotlight and we will protect him. Romelu will always be a part of the solution.

Sometimes it is like this with strikers if they struggle with self-confidence and are unable to get involved with a good defensive side.

It is not what we want or what Romelu wants but it is not the time to laugh about him or make jokes about him.

In 17 appearances since rejoining the club this summer, the Belgian has only managed five goals, five of which were in the premier league.

He hasn't scored a league goal since he was dropped for a game for an interview that appeared critical of the club.

He scored in the final win over Palmeiras in the Club World Cup.

Other big-money strikers to struggle for goals in comparison to their strike-rate elsewhere include Fernando Torres, and the current team-mate of Romelu Lukaku.

It may not be the easiest place in the world for strikers, as there is a history of them struggling at the club.

In my opinion, the team that I think is a strong defensive team, a physical team, and that has a certain attitude is the team that I think is the team that is the team that is the team that is the team that is the team that is the team that is the team We want a lot of our strikers to defend.

The first leg of the last-16 tie with Lille is Tuesday.

Match of the Day analysis

The Match of the Day team of Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker and Ian Wright agreed that the team-mates of Romelu Lukaku should take some of the blame for his lack of impact.

Shearer said there was not an understanding of what he wanted. He stopped running because the ball was not coming in. Seven touches is amazing.

He has to make sure his teammates are prepared to pass the ball in. On who is to blame, it is a bit of both. He has to be demanding but there is no point paying so much if you don't play to your forward's strength.

Lineker said that if he wasn't getting service, he would be hammering them. You would be giving them a hard time. You would be shouting and screaming to get the ball.

Wright said: "They can't be doing it in training because they're not looking when the ball should be put into an area for him." How can you not play to his strengths?
