The crew of the giant cargo ship abandoned the ship after it caught fire in the Atlantic.

Since then it has been adrift off the Azores, a smoking spectacle and full of expensive automobiles.

It is unlikely that the vessel will ever make it to the port of Davisville in North Kingstown as planned.

On Friday, the fire was put out and a Dutch team was dispatched to the Azores to recover the boat. There are some photos that show it listing to one side.

If the fire is out, the Felicity Ace will be towed back to mainland Europe, since it is too large to be brought to the Azores.

The price of used cars has gone up as gas prices go up. New car prices are going up.

Why was this massive ship coming to Rhode Island?

One of the largest auto import facilities in North America is located in Davisville.

In a typical year, more than 200,000 vehicles per year drive straight off massive vessels like the Felicity Ace and onto the asphalt at Davisville before being sent to dealerships throughout the Northeast.

The Felicity Ace left Emden, Germany on February 10 to begin its journey across the Atlantic. It is owned by Snowcape Car Carriers.

How many cars was it delivering to Rhode Island?

The Felicity Ace can hold more than 5,000 cars, but it may not have been carrying that many when it caught fire. Not all of them were going to North Kingstown.

The 1,582 cars that were supposed to be off loaded in Rhode Island were supposed to arrive in Davisville. The exact arrival time for cargo vessels can change depending on the weather.

The state of Rhode Island bought $7.5 million in land for the expansion of the Port of Providence.

The rest of the cars were fined.

Car carriers from Europe usually stop at a port on the East Coast and then travel south. In addition to Davisville, there are big auto import terminals in New Jersey, Baltimore and Georgia.

What kinds of cars were coming here?

The Volkswagen Group, which owns the Volkswagen brand, as well as other brands, such asPorsche, Audi, and Bentley, owned the vehicles on the Felicity Ace.

The port officials in Rhode Island were expecting 1,582 cars.

No Lamborghinis?

The burning ship may have had some cars on it, but they weren't being imported at Davisville.

Will this affect the RI auto market?

The supply of cars has been tight due to computer chip shortages.

Some sports car buyers on Friday mourned the loss of their future sports cars online, but it's not clear if the loss of cars due to the fire will be noticed on the broader market.

Most of the vehicles that were expected to arrive at Davisville were going to be sold in other states.

There are three Volkswagen dealers in Rhode Island and one Porche dealership.

On Friday, a message was not returned.

Is the Felicity Ace a regular off Quonset Point?

Around 670 of the type of large car carriers similar to the Felicity Ace are found around the world.

Quonset officials can't say how many times the Felicity Ace visited Davisville last year.

No one in Rhode Island port operations is likely to be involved with the ship now.

It doesn't become a Quonset matter until it arrives at the Port off the shore, where the PILOT boards the vessel to make its final approach.

Is the U.S. Coast Guard getting involved?

No. The U.S. Coast Guard District 1 Public Affairs office in Boston wrote in an email that it doesn't expect to have a role and that the Portuguese Navy is handling things.

What now?

The value of the cargo and the condition of the ship are what determines compensation under maritime law.

Jonathan Gutoff, a professor at Roger Williams University School of Law who teaches maritime law, said a negotiation would likely begin between the vessel owner and the salvage company if the Felicity Ace can be towed back to Europe.

If the ship poses an environmental risk to anywhere it is towed, or if there are injuries to crew, these cases can be complex. All 22 crew members got off without injury.

The fact that the cargo may belong to one manufacturer would make it easier to resolve a dispute than if the vessel has been carrying items for multiple owners.

Gutoff said that if the cars and vessel are insured, there is a chance of a dispute over the salvage.
