The White House confirmed on Monday night that President Joe Biden had agreed to meet with Putin in principle, in a French government-brokered move that comes amid heightened tensions in eastern Ukraine.

The meeting was announced by the office of the French President, who said he had asked the two leaders to meet to discuss security and strategic stability in Europe.

The White House said that Biden accepted the meeting if Russia did not invade Ukraine.

If Russia goes ahead with the invasion, the U.S. is prepared to impose swift and severe consequences.

The substance of the summit would be worked out by the U.S. Secretary of State and Russian Foreign Minister.

The summit will be followed by a gathering of relevant stakeholders to discuss security and strategic stability in Europe.

As the President has made clear, we are committed to pursuing diplomacy until the moment an invasion begins, and we are also ready to impose swift and severe consequences should Russia choose war.

This is not a finished story.
