The city of Omaha, Neb. A Nebraska state senator called for a criminal investigation after one of her colleagues said he would resign after admitting that he took photos of a female legislative aide without her knowledge.

According to the Omaha World-Herald, Megan Hunt wrote a letter to the state attorney general and Nebraska State Patrol asking them to investigate the conduct of Republican Sen. Mike Groene.

Groene told The Associated Press that he would be stepping down this week to avoid a public uproar. The conservative from North Platte who often disagreed with his Democratic colleagues in the Legislature also said he would withdraw from the race for the University of Nebraska Board of regents.

Groene resigned after it was reported that one of his staffers had filed a complaint after she discovered the photos on Groene's laptop, which he had given her to complete a project.

One detail in the initial stories about her complaint was incorrect, according to the staffer who was photographed. She did not find any evidence that the photos had been sent to anyone else.

Konecko said that some of the photos were close-ups of parts of her body.

The Associated Press did not typically name victims of sexual harassment, but did so in this case because the newspaper said it published Konecko's name at her request.

Groene said that he took photos of the staffer, but that they were harmless images of other people in his office. He denied that any of them were sexual in nature.

Konecko told the newspaper that she filed a complaint under the Legislature's workplace harassment policy in February, and then transferred to another legislative office. She said that no one ordered her not to talk about it, but that she will not answer any more questions now that it is being investigated.

I have not been told or directed to do anything, but I will not be answering any questions or sharing any information because of the call for a formal investigation.

Groene said he apologized to the staffer after she confronted him about the photos.

A Nebraska State Patrol spokesman told the newspaper that it had received Hunt's letter and was talking to the Attorney General's office about it. The Attorney General's office will review the letter.

Under the Legislature's policy, formal complaints about senators or staffers are filed with the Legislature's Executive Board, but they are not released to the public unless the committee finds serious misconduct.

Groene fought to lower property taxes during his time in the Legislature. The Legislature's Education Committee was led by him for four years before his colleagues voted to replace him with a Democrat.

Due to term limits, Groene was going to leave the Legislature next year.
