Hundreds of police in riot gear swept through Canada's capital on Saturday, taking control of the streets around the Parliament buildings and ending a three-week protest.

Protesters retreated from the largest police operation in the country's history, with police arresting or driving out demonstrators and towing away their trucks.

Interim Police Chief Steve Bell said that there were some smaller protests that continued. We will keep going until it is complete.

One of the organizers told reporters that they had decided to peacefully withdraw from the streets.

Tom Marazzo said at a press conference that they would regroup as a grassroots movement.

Bell said 170 people were arrested Friday and Saturday and multiple investigations had been launched because of weapons seizures.

He said at the press conference that he would go after protesters who did not leave with financial sanctions and criminal charges.

The protesters were gone from the street in front of Parliament Hill by early Saturday afternoon. It had been occupied by protesters and their trucks since late last month.

Jeremy Glass of Shelburne, Ontario, said that authorities were trying to push the protesters away from the Parliament buildings. We are no longer in possession of it.

Police said protesters remained aggressive and assaultive and that pepper spray had been used to protect officers. Children were brought right to the police lines, as authorities said it was putting the children at risk.

Canadian authorities used emergency powers to seize 76 bank accounts connected to protesters, totaling over three million dollars.

On Saturday, they closed a bridge into the nation's capital from Quebec to prevent a renewed influx of protesters.

Around midday, protest organizers said they had ordered truck drivers to leave Parliament Hill, decrying the police actions as abuse of power.

The organizers said in a statement that it would take time to move the trucks.

The protesters were told to leave by the police. We gave you time to leave. You were aggressive with officers and the horses, we were slow and methodical. Helmets and batons are being included for our safety based on your behavior.

Police said a protester launched a gas canister and was arrested.

Bell said that no protesters had been hurt and that most of the arrests were for mischief charges. He said one officer had an injury.

Four protest leaders were arrested. One of them received bail.

Tow truck operators wearing ski masks and their companies taped over decals on their trucks arrived under police escort and started removing hundreds of big rigs, campers and other vehicles parked shoulder to shoulder near Parliament. Police smashed through the door of a camper and took it away.

Hundreds of police, some in riot gear and some carrying automatic weapons, descended into the protest zone on Friday morning and began leading demonstrators away in handcuffs through the snowy streets.

After weeks of demonstrations and blockades that shut down border crossings into the U.S. and created one of the most serious tests yet for Trudeau, the capital and its paralyzed streets were the movement's last major stronghold. Canada's reputation for civility was hurt by them, with some blaming America's influence.

The Freedom Convoy demonstrations initially focused on Canada's vaccine requirement for truck drivers entering the country, but soon turned into a broad attack on Trudeau's government.

A court injunction was obtained to stop the truck drivers from making noise.

Trudeau said the protesters were members of a fringe element. Canadians have largely embraced the country's COVID-19 restrictions, with the vast majority vaccinations. The vaccine and mask mandates imposed by the provinces are falling away quickly.

The Ambassador Bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit disrupted the flow of auto parts between the two countries and forced the industry to curtail production. The siege was lifted last weekend.

The Canadian border agency warned travelers that operations at a key truck crossing from western Canada into the United States had been slowed by protesters, advising them to find a different route. Officials said the crossing was open, but no further information was available.

Conservatives in the U.S. gave money to support the protests.
