A Republican candidate for governor of Wisconsin wants to decertify the state's 2020 presidential election results in order to oust President Joe Biden.
After jumping into the governor's race earlier this month, state Rep. Timothy Ramthun shook up the Republican primary by questioning the results of the 2020 presidential election.
He told The New York Times that this is a real issue. We are not fringe.
Ramthun was praised by Trump for putting forward a resolution to decertify the Wisconsin election results. Rebecca Kleefisch is under pressure to appeal to the former president's supporters.
Kleefisch declined to say if the president won the election fairly.
In November 2020, Biden defeated Trump in Wisconsin, one of the nation's premier swing states, by roughly 20,000 votes. There was no evidence of voter fraud when the results were certified.
Despite the efforts of many party leaders to focus on the 2020 election, base Republicans continue to tune into appeals from the former president and his allies.
According to a poll done by the law school in October of 2021, only 33% of Republicans were confident in the results of the 2020 election. Independents and Democrats both expressed confidence in the results.
Robin Vos, who has been a foil to Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, has become a target of conservative activists because of his inability to rein in some of the most outspoken forces within the party.
The speaker has been asked to resign from his post by multiple Republican county chapters over his handling of issues related to the 2020 election, a reversal of fortune for the conservative leader and a troubling sign of discontent for a party that is itching to retake the Governor's Mansion and reelect US.
GOP state Rep. Rob Swearingen told The Times that the party was not well-served by such battles.
He told the newspaper that the Republican Party needs more than this.
Over the past year, Wisconsin Republicans have passed a set of restrictive voting laws which were vetoed by Evers, while also moving to conduct an audit of the 2020 results, hiring retired police officers to conduct a probe looking into potential voter fraud.
In the past, Trump was less than impressed by the efforts of the GOP legislative leaders to investigate the 2020 results.
He said in a statement last June that Robin Vos, Chris Kapenga, and the Senate Majority Leader were working hard to cover up election corruption in Wisconsin. Don't fall for their lies!
He said that the Republican leaders need to support the people who elected them by giving them a full forensic investigation. I have no doubt that they will be run out of office if they don't.
