There are no fossil fuel-powered cars filling up at the old Shell gas station in London.
A run-of-the-mill gas station is now something different. The site has been converted into a charging hub for electric vehicles.
The Shell station opened in January of 2022. It is the first time that Shell has converted a gas station into an EV-only charging hub.
The charging infrastructure is not keeping up with demand. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders says that 190,000 new electric vehicles were registered in the UK in 2021, yet there are just under 29,000 EV charging points in the country.
The mismatch could make it hard for the government to meet its goal of phasing out sales of new fossil fuel-powered vehicles by 2030. President Joe Biden wants half of US new car sales to be electric by the same year.
Shell is investing to meet EV demand.
