Former state Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman told Waukesha County Circuit Judge Ralph Ramirez he should incarcerate mayors of Madison and Green Bay and others if they don’t sit for interviews with him behind closed doors in his review of the 2020 presidential election.

Assembly Republicans want to jail the chairwoman of the state Elections Commission as part of their review of the 2020 presidential election.

Michael Gableman, a former state Supreme Court justice who is leading the review for the Republicans, has shifted his approach. He abandoned the subpoenas he issued to Voces de la Frontera Action three days ago.

An attorney working with Gableman told a judge a month ago that he was hoping to avoid jailing the mayors of Madison and Green Bay.

Gableman told the judge that he should incarcerate the mayors if they don't sit for interviews with him.

The officials don't think Gableman should be able to speak to them out of the public eye. They argue that the interviews should be done by a legislative committee.

The Republican review of Wisconsin's 2020 presidential election has a who's who.

In Wisconsin, Joe Biden beat Donald Trump. Biden's win was confirmed by recounts and court rulings. There was no evidence of significant fraud found in the legislative audit and study.

Republican lawmakers launched their review because they still have questions about the election.

Ann Jacobs, the Democratic chairwoman of the bipartisan Elections Commission, was one of the people Gableman targeted in his latest filing.

Gableman's review went off the rails after he said he was trying to avoid doing so.

She said it was an " awfully bold move for someone we don't even know is authorized to conduct an investigation."

Gableman amended his lawsuit on Friday. Ramirez will have a hearing in April to figure out how far Gableman's powers go.

The authority of Gableman is being tested in a lawsuit. The Elections Commission is represented by Kaul.

In January, Rhonda Lanford declined to immediately block subpoenas Gableman issued to the Elections Commission, saying she would decide later whether they are valid.

Voces received subpoenas from Gableman. Gableman withdrew the subpoenas after that happened.

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos is a Republican from Rochester. Vos gave Gableman a taxpayer-funded budget.

Vos said on Friday that Gableman has issued more than 100 subpoenas. Dozens of the subpoenas have never been made public.

Vos said he expected Gableman to publish a report this month. Gableman's work was supposed to be finished by last fall.

It is likely that the litigation over Gableman's work will take months to resolve. Taxpayers are covering a lot of legal work.
