Police officers shut down an Indigenous sugarbush ceremony in River Rouge Park despite the fact that the organizers had valid fire permits. The Detroit Police Department didn't respond to requests for comment. The Detroit Sugarbush Project is led by a coalition of local groups who want to teach Detroiters how to make maple syrup. Three years ago, participants learned from the Anishinaanabe and Potawatomi people in the Midwest about sugerbush ceremonies, tapped maple trees in River Rouge Park and boiled sap over a fire. According to the project website and ceremony organizers, the city of Detroit issued the project a Memorandum of Understanding to do as much as possible. Antonio Cosme said he received a burn permit for the bonfire from the fire department. The roughly 20 attendees noticed a helicopter overhead after the prayers and before dinner. Rosebud Bear-Schneider said they saw police cars and lights through the trees. We thought someone else might be getting pulled over. We did not think it was for us. Bear-Schneider said we were doing nothing wrong. He discovered that seven police cars and over a dozen officers had arrived. The officer in charge was shown the permits and MOU by him. Six officers in tactical gear appeared at the edge of the woods and told attendees they had two minutes to put out the fire and leave. Smoke from the recently extinguished fire billowed between the officers and attendees as they stood side-by-side along the edge of the clearing. Bear-Schneider said they tried to tell them about their sovereignty. They didn't want to hear anything. One officer can be heard in the video telling attendees that they were in violation of the city's curfew for entering the park after dark. Bear-Schneider says they were allowed to stay in the park until 10 p.m., even without the city permit. Unless posted signs designate a different period of closing, all City parks and public places will be closed from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. The officer in charge gave the go-ahead for the ceremony to continue, but as he did so, he saw attendees filing from the woods with tables and chairs. Bear-Schneider said the six officers watched the attendees pack up, threatening to arrest them if they did not comply, until the situation was solved by the officer in charge. It was clear that this was a major miscommunication between all of the departments. No citations were given. The night ended with attendees filing a police report with the officer in charge. A second report was filed at the Detroit Police Department on Saturday. The paperwork for the group is up to date and will continue as planned. They are not stopping us.
