Taylor made eight Pro Bowls over the course of his 13-year career after being drafted by Washington with the third overall pick in 1964. He retired in 1977 as the all-time leader in catches with 649, but the record has since been broken.

Taylor spent his first three seasons as a halfback. He had 2,510 yards receiving and 1,419 yards rushing in three seasons before becoming a full-time receiver in 1967. He helped Washington get to the Super Bowl.
