Almost literally, Musk wants to re-invent the wheel. Business Insider reported yesterday that the billionaire CEO of the electric car company submitted a proposal to build a tunnel underneath Miami.

Musk's The Boring Company would complete the project, which would use only Musk's vehicles to ferry passengers between seven stations underground. Non-Tesla cars can access the loop system, but they don't interface with any other public transit Miami already has.

Officials seem pretty excited.

North Miami Beach commissioner Michael Joseph told Insider that this would be a way of alleviating a lot of traffic.

This wouldn't be the Boring Company's first project, as it previously opened similar loop systems in California and Las Vegas, Nevada. Joseph toldInsider that he had already spoken to Musk's company several times about an underground transit system and had submitted a paper to the tunneling firm for review.

Going Under

The best part of a public transit system is the ease of access. Public transit creates less congestion, faster commute, more convenience, higher productivity and lower emissions according to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

There are already four bus routes that connect to Newport Pier, which Musk's proposal includes a stop for. The city has 25 miles of dual track rail that connects to other rail and bus routes.

We have a lot of questions because of the existing transit systems in Miami. Who is Musk's new tunnel for? Should customers walk from their location to the loop station? If there aren't any bus or rail routes nearby, how will they get transit? According to Insider, why is the city trying to get funding for a new project when it could invest in existing transit?

Musk's additions and the new tunnel could provide services that people enjoy. With an existing bus and rail system in place, it's hard to see how a tunnel that only usesTesla cars adds value.

Musk's underground escapades include a tunnel for his own traffic jam.
