  • The Wyoming proposal that Trump supported would end the practice of voting in state primaries by people who don't live there.

  • Liz Cheney has fallen out of favor with many Republicans.

  • Non- Republicans would not be allowed to request a GOP ballot and vote in the other party's primary.

Donald Trump is pushing Wyoming lawmakers to back legislation that would bar Democrats and other non- Republicans from voting in GOP primaries in a move that is seen as a way to sink Rep. Liz Cheney's chances of being re-elected by the party.

Cheney, who has clashed with Trump over his election claims and the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol, is set to face water rights attorney Hageman in a Republican primary in August.

Democrats, Republicans, and independents would not be allowed to switch their party affiliation on the day of the primary election under the proposed legislation.

On Thursday, Trump applauded the legislation.

The former president said in a statement that the bill ensures that the voters in each party will choose their nominees for the general election.

It makes sense that only Democrats vote in the Democrat primary and only Republicans vote in the Republican primary. This bill has my full endorsement and support.

Several of Trump's political associates were privately advocating for passage of the bill, with several state Republicans pushing for the change to ensure that Democrats don't switch parties to support Cheney in the GOP primary.

Hageman, one of several Republican primary challengers to Cheney, is the congresswoman's highest-profile challenge as she has been endorsed by the former president and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California.

According to two individuals with knowledge of the situation, Trump and David McIntosh called Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon in recent weeks in order to get his support for the bill.

The communications director for Gordon told the outlet that the governor was not being pressured to make changes to the bill.

He said that the Governor had many conversations about the issue, including with President Trump.

Cheney has become a polarizing figure among state Republicans

Donald Trump Jr. encouraged voters in the Equality State to pay attention to the issue. The chairman of the American Conservative Union, who has close ties to Trump, said that his organization might use support of the bill to score legislators.

There was a big push this morning to get all of ourMAGAInfluencers to push it and make a big deal out of it.

The bill backed by Trump Jr. was rejected by the Wyoming legislature last year.

Cheney won the GOP House nomination with 39% of the vote in a multicandidate primary before cruising to an easy win in the general election. The runner-up in the GOP primary could have consolidated a majority of the vote in a second contest and defeated Cheney, if the law had been in place at the time.

Cheney told The New York Times that she wouldn't ask Democrats to vote for her in the Republican primary despite her popularity among base voters.

According to The Times, only 31% of Wyoming Republicans had a favorable opinion of Cheney in a recent private poll.

The congresswoman has deep roots in the state, as her name recognition is linked to that of her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney.

She forged a polarizing legacy as a result of her criticism of Trump.

Cheney became the House Republican Conference Chair two years after joining the lower chamber. She was a reliable supporter of Trump for most of his time in the White House.

She voted to impeach the former president for inciting insurrection after she criticized his response to the riot.

The January 6 select committee, which has been probing the riot in the face of opposition from Trump and most congressional Republicans, has been chaired by Cheney after Pelosi stripped her of her leadership position.
