Jacob Thomson said he was not a hero for intervening when he saw a female student walking and being followed by a man.

Thomson said Friday that he drove the bus around the block to check on the student because of his instinct of being a dad.

The bus driver was going to start his route at 7:30 a.m. He saw the older man following the student near the intersection.

I don't know what he said to her, but he got her attention. She was startled at first. Thomson said that it caught his eye to keep looking to make sure that everything was okay.

At that time, he usually has to drop off a student at the elementary school, but only one other student for his middle school route was on his bus.

Thomson said that he was lucky that he was in the right place at the right time. I might not have been there.

The suspect turned around and walked away as the bus approached the girl.

Thomson told the girl that she could sit in his bus and wait until her regular bus arrived.

Thomson said that she was distraught.

The student said the man tried to abduct her and tried to offer her a cigarette, Thomson said.

He said it was something to entice your child to come over.

Sharing the credit

He waited for the regular bus to arrive and contacted bus dispatch.

After driving a few blocks, Thomson noticed several police vehicles and pulled over to tell an officer about it.

He immediately took care of the situation. Within 30 minutes, I was told the suspect was in custody. Thomson said to shout out to APD for doing their due diligence while they were busy.

The student was interviewed by the student resource officer when she arrived at her middle school.

The student said that the suspect tried to drag her to an abandoned house.

Police said the main was a person who was homeless. His bond was set at $15,000 after he was charged with felony injury to a child. According to online jail records, he was in the Taylor County Jail on Friday.

Thomson was praised by the police in a news release. The mother of the student contacted him to express her gratitude.

Thomson said that more heroes should be called out because APD responded as quickly as possible.

Situationally Aware

Thomson said he did what any parent would do in the same situation.

We are so caught up in our cell phones that we are not aware of what is going on around us.

He tries to teach his son and daughter how to be aware of what's happening around them.

Just because it was a female that it happened to doesn't mean that boys are also victims. Thomson said that you try to teach both your kids the same way to be aware of the situation and always pay attention to what is around them.

A new bus driver

After living in San Antonio for a couple of years, Thomson returned to his hometown. He attended Bonham Elementary and Lincoln Middle School.

He became a bus driver in October after five years at senior living facilities. Many districts across the state have a bus driver shortage.

He said he enjoys his job.

They are not as hard to drive as you might think. He said you can swing them around corners better than you think.

He said that the students have been manageable.

Thomson said that he doesn't have any problems with his young riders.
