Great Britain's men's curling team had to settle for a silver medal as Sweden won the gold medal.
Sweden were able to score one in the extra end because of their last stone advantage.
The final shot to try and force a steal did not come off and left the Swedish skip with a victory.
Britain has been waiting for a men's curling gold medal for 98 years.
The women's side have a chance to win the competition when they face Japan on Sunday.
The two sides met in their third consecutive major championship final as Swedish skip Edin described it as a "clash of the titans" in men's curling.
Scotland avenged their loss in the European final in December by beating Sweden in the world title match, but the two sides could barely be separated once more.
Sweden took two in the second end and then stole one in the third to give them a 3-1 lead.
After clinging to one with the hammer in the next, they built their way back into the game.
They needed a score of two or more in the ninth end to beat Sweden.
When Edin shut off the chance of two, Mouat chose to blank and take the hammer into the last.
The British skip had the chance to force the extra end, but the odds were against them with Sweden having the last stone.
After tense timeouts from both teams, Mouat was left with a difficult hit and roll shot to try to steal one and the match, but it fell short.
Edin, considered one of the best players of all time, now has the gold medal that he was denied when he took silver and bronze at the past two Olympics.
