The Championship game between Bournemouth andNottingham Forest was one of six games that have been postponed this weekend.
The game was scheduled to start at 19:45GMT.
The match was postponed due to storm damage to sections of roofing.
The English Football League said it was extremely disappointed that the decision had not been made earlier.
After reading a prohibition notice issued by the local safety advisory group to Bournemouth, the EFL accepted that repair work could not have been carried out on Friday.
The service of the notice, despite the best efforts of Bournemouth and Forest, has led to the postponement.
Three of the top five divisions in England have had their games postponed because of safety concerns.
The National League match between Southend United and Grimsby Town is off after Roots Hall was damaged by wind, but the meeting of the top two sides in League One between Rotherham and Wigan remains on.
The games that were postponed on Saturday are between Barrow in League Two and Exeter in the National League.
Bournemouth said that the damage done to the stadium could pose a risk to the safety of fans.
The damage can't be repaired in time for the fixture on Friday or on Saturday because of the impact of the storm.
The club would like to assure supporters that it has been made with the safety of everyone in mind and that they have been made aware of this.
Both clubs and Sky Sports were making final preparations for the match, which had been due to be broadcast live.
The travelling supporters who have braved the conditions to go and support their team must be given consideration in these matters, as we acknowledge safety is the number one priority.
The fixture could not be rearranged for Saturday or Sunday, Forest said in their statement.
