Hippopotamuses are large, round, water-loving animals that are native to Africa. The Greek word for "water horse" or "river horse" is what the word "hippopotamus" comes from. According to the San Diego Zoo, pigs, whales and dolphins are the closest living relatives to the Hippos.

According to the African Wildlife Foundation, the third largest living land mammal after elephants and white rhinos is the rotund common Hippos. They grow to between 10 and 16 feet (3 and 5 meters) long and up to 22 feet (6 meters) tall at the shoulder. The average female is around 3000 lbs. Men weigh between 3,500 and 9,920 lbs. According to the San Diego Zoo, the weight is between 1,600 and 4,500 kilograms.

The San Diego Zoo says that the giant animals are related to the small and rare pygmy Hippo, which is 2.5 to 3.2 feet tall and 1.5 to 1.75 m long. Hippos can weigh between 350 and 600 lbs. The weight is 160 and 270.

Habitat and behavior

Hippos live in Africa. They live in areas with lots of water and spend most of their time submerged to keep their skin moist and cool. Hippos spend up to 16 hours a day in the water.

Hippos are social beasts and hang out in groups. Some groups have as many as 200 individuals, while schools of Hippos usually have 10 to 30 members. According to the San Diego Zoo, the school is usually led by a male.

Hippos are loud. The San Diego Zoo says that their sounds are the same volume you would hear at a rock concert. The signature noise of the animals can be heard from more than a mile away. Subsonic vocalizations are used to communicate by these booming creatures.

Hippos are dangerous. They use large teeth and tusks to fight off threats. Sometimes, their young fall victim to adult tempers. According to PBS, a young Hippo caught in the middle of a fight can be seriously hurt or even crushed.

Hippos are able to move through the water, but they cannot swim. The animals glide through the water by pushing themselves off other objects. According to National Geographic, they can stay underwater for up to 5 minutes.

Hungry, hungry hippos

Hippos have a good appetite. Adults eat about 80 lbs. They travel up to 6 miles in a night to get their fill. According to National Geographic, they eat fruit that they find. Hippos can store food in their stomachs for up to three weeks if food is hard to come by.

In a study published in the journal Mammal Review, scientists reported that Hippos occasionally feed on the carcasses of animals, including other Hippos.

Baby hippos

The San Diego Zoo says that female hippos have a period of eight months and only one baby at a time. The calf is between 50 and 120 lbs. There are 23 and 50 kilograms. During its first eight months, the calf nurses while its mother is on land or underwater. The calf closes its nose and ears when it dives. Hippos have this ability. Hippos protect their eyes while they are underwater.

The San Diego Zoo says a Hippo calf is 7 years old. The average life span of a Hippo in the wild is between 40 and 61 years, according to the University of Michigan.

Attacks on humans

The largest land mammal in the world is the Hippopotamus. 500 people are killed annually in Africa by these semiaquatic giants. Hippos are well-equipped to deliver a lot of damage to anything that wanders into their territory.

A hippo attacked a small boat filled with Nigerian school children, killing 12 students and one teacher on board, ABC News reported. Hippos wander onto land in search of food and there are conflicts between humans and them.

Conservation status

The common Hippo is vulnerable to extinction, according to the International Union forConserving of Nature. Between 115,000 and 130,000 common Hippos remain in the wild according to the IUCN. The population of the Hippo has not increased since the early 2000s due to Poaching and habitat loss.

Invasive hippos

Though officials confiscated other exotic animals in Escobar's private zoo, the escaped hippos — which can weigh thousands of pounds — were deemed too dangerous to capture.

There were many exotic animals on the estate of the drug lord. The assets of the dead man, including his menagerie, were seized by the government. His four hippos were left to fend for themselves after most of his animals were transferred to zoos and aquariums. Four animals made their way into the waterways of the country.

There are an estimated 80 hippos in the river networks near Medelln, which is where the Hacienda Npoles estate was located, according to Live Science. The local environment is degraded by the presence of the Hippos, as each individual Hippo destroys dozens of pounds of vegetation a night and creates enormous quantities of poop.

Many people in the country oppose the removal of the ungulates. The risk to native species is high, and the environmental effect is unpredictable.
