The Minnesota Vikings can expect to pay a lot of money if they want to extend KirkCousins contract.

According to reporter Jordan Schultz, the Vikings could lose around $40 million per season if they don't extend the quarterback.

The Vikings need to make some moves to get under the salary cap. They are over the cap by $14.7 million.

The third-highest among NFL quarterbacks is the cap hit of Cousins. He signed a two-year extension in 2020.

Minnesota has a number of key free agents.

The Vikings could be forced to either play out his deal or trade him if the camp tries to force them to.

Kevin O'Connell said during his introductory press conference that he is excited to work with Cousins.

"We've already started thinking about how we're going to build those systems for him and our other quarterbacks and really the tremendous skill group that we have, our guys up front. It takes all 11 to move the football on offense, to run it, to throw it, to score points in the red zone. But I'm anticipating Kirk being a part of what we do."

He finished his fourth season with the Vikings. The three-time Pro Bowler has thrown for over 16,000 yards and over 100 touchdown in 63 starts.

He had 4,221 passing yards and 33 touchdown in the NFL. The Vikings missed the playoffs for the second year in a row, finishing second in the North with an 8-9 record.
