  • Noem signed a bill that banned girls and women from competing on female sports teams.

The White House derided Noem because she was unable to answer a question about the high depression rate within South Dakota's LGBTQ communities.

The White House deputy press secretary responded to a clip of Noem with "Here's a start for you, Governor." Don't advance policies that attack trans youth. Don't fund ads attacking LGBT youth.

According to a recent national study, the highest rate of depression in the country is in the state. A reporter asks Noem about the issue at a news conference on Thursday.

The reporter asked Noem why he thought that was.

Noem made national headlines earlier this month after she signed a bill into law banning trans girls and college-aged women from participating in sports teams that match their gender identity. South Dakota is the first state to do it this year.

Noem said that the bill was about fairness and allowing biological females in their sex to compete fairly.

The legislation was highlighted in an advertisement released by Noem.

In South Dakota, only girls play sports. Because of the leadership of Governor Noem.

The GOP-led bans have been condemned as dehumanizing. Legal challenges have been faced by many of the bills.

The news of such restrictions negatively impacted the mental health of more than 85% of the young people who responded to the survey.
