The legislation was introduced in January and the governor spoke out in support of it at a press conference on Friday.

The bill would allow private citizens to bring civil lawsuits against gun industry members who violate gun control laws.

injury or death,” or who have engaged in “unfair business practices.”

The bill would allow people to file lawsuits if gun dealers knowingly sell firearms to people who can't legally own them.

Untraceable firearm kits that people can buy without a background check and ghost guns, which people can buy without a background check, have become a growing issue in California.

Private lawsuits can be brought against anyone who aids or abets abortion after six weeks into a pregnant woman's fetus.

The law the Supreme Court just upheld in Texas is very similar to the one the Supreme Court has repeatedly declined to strike down.

If Texas can use a law to ban a woman's right to choose and to put her health at risk, we will use that same law to save lives and improve the health and safety of the people in the state of California.

Sam Paredes, a gun advocate in the state, said that Newsom can ban guns, but he will try to bankrupt lawful firearms-related businesses.

Key Background

The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act shields gun manufacturers and distributors from being sued for acts of violence committed with their firearms. The federal law allows for civil lawsuits if the gun maker or dealer violates a state law that results in direct harm to the person bringing the gun. The New York bill allows civil lawsuits to be brought against gun industry members if they don't have reasonable controls. The families of the victims in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting reached a $73 million settlement with gun manufacturer Remington Arms, a suit that also took advantage of an exception in the federal law.

Tangent

Since taking effect in September, Texas has been able to ignore federal protections for abortion because of the lawsuit provision in the legislation. The Supreme Court ruled that most state officials can't be named as defendants in a challenge brought by abortion providers, and that the appeals court that put the law back in place overturned a district judge's blocking the law. Critics of the law have argued that states could copy it for other reasons. Gun rights groups warned the Supreme Court the law could be used as a basis for gun control laws like California's bill, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund wrote in an amicus brief to the court.

The bill allows citizens to enforce the weapons ban.

The bill would make it easier to file a lawsuit.
