  • The judge asked the public to sympathize with Kim Potter, a former police officer.

  • Potter was sentenced to 2 years in prison on Friday for the killing of Wright during a traffic stop.

  • Police officers have the most difficult job in public service, according to Chu.

The Minnesota judge who handed down a 2-year sentence to former cop Kim Potter for killing a man got emotional as she asked the public to sympathize with the ex-officer.

The judge said in the courtroom that there would be those who disagreed with the sentence.

Chu said that his life mattered and that those who disagreed and felt a longer prison sentence was appropriate should try to empathise with Mrs. Potter.

On April 11, 2021, Potter shot and killed Wright during a traffic stop in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center. Potter claimed she meant to use her stun gun on Wright and grabbed her gun by mistake, but prosecutors noted that her stun gun was holstered on the opposite side of her body.

After her conviction in December 2021, Potter faced up to 25 years in prison.

According to court documents, prosecutors had asked the judge to sentence Potter to more than 7 years in prison, while Potter's defense argued in court that she should only be sentenced to a year of supervised release.

Potter will serve 16 months in prison with the possibility of 8 months of supervised release for the end of her sentence.

As she quoted former President Barack Obama, Chu appeared to tear up, saying that empathy is a quality of character that can change the world.

The judge got emotional as she defended Potter.

Of all the jobs in public service, police officers have the most difficult one.

The judge said that they must make snap decisions.

An emotional Chu continued, "Officer Potter made a mistake that ended tragically."

She never intended to hurt anyone. Chu said that her conduct cries out for a sentence that is significantly below the guidelines.

At a press conference after the sentencing on Friday, Wright's father called the sentence a slap in the face. Bryant told reporters that it felt like the justice system had been murdered.

To sit there and pour my heart out in my victim impact statement that took so long to write, and I rewrote it over and over again, to not get a response from the judge, she broke out in tears.
