The police posted at 11:53 a.m. After arresting 15 protesters and towing four vehicles, they cleared one of the streets that had been blocked by protesters who have been in the city for weeks.

The Children's Aid Society of Ottawa said in a statement that it was working with the police to ensure the safety of the children and that it had not yet needed to take any children into its care.

A sonic cannon has been brought in that could potentially be used to break up the holdout.

By 11 a.m., police had gathered with riot gear to dismantle the protest, as police warned protesters that they must leave immediately and remove vehicles and property from the area.

Police said they were aware of a concerted effort to overwhelm the emergency lines.

The city published a map of the zone they intended to clear after police started making arrests to end the demonstration that has grown unpopular among Canadians.

Pat King, one of the organizers of the Freedom Convoy, told his supporters not to stop and to hold the line on Facebook Live Friday.

The two prominent organizers of the protest, Chris Barber and Tamara Lich, were arrested on Thursday. The Freedom Convoy moved into downtownOttawa in late January to protest Covid-19 vaccine mandates for cross-border truckers, which caused some local businesses to halt. The demonstration against Covid-19 rules in downtown Ottawa quickly expanded to protests at three critical bridges at the U.S.-Canada border. It inspired similar demonstrations in other countries. The Emergencies Act became law in 1988 and was used by the Prime Minister to clear the protests. Dozens of protesters were arrested at the border. Protesters began leaving the Ambassador Bridge and other border crossings on Saturday, a day after police moved in to remove them.

The Freedom Convoy has received support from former President Donald Trump, as well as Sen. Ted Cruz.

Surprising Fact

The names and contact information of people who donated to the Freedom Convoy and Adopt-a-Trucker campaigns were leaked on Monday. According to a Washington Post analysis of the leaked fundraising data of the two campaigns that had amassed a combined total of around $9 million from around 100,000 donors, nearly 42% of the total, the website was hacked on Sunday evening. The majority of the money came from Canada. Protesters started raising money on GiveSendGo after GoFundMe froze donations to the cause. Trudeau's emergency order gave financial institutions the authority to freeze accounts that they believe are tied to the Freedom Convoy. As of Friday morning, the Adopt-a-Trucker campaign had raised more than half a million dollars, and the Freedom Convoy campaign had raised more than half a million dollars.
