The parents of Daunte spoke outside the courthouse, calling the sentencing a failure of justice. The justice system did it all over again after Kim Potter murdered her son. Potter was sentenced to 2 years for the killing of Wright. Potter was sentenced to 24 months in a courtroom in Minnesota, but only 16 months of that will be served behind bars, the remaining time will be on supervised release. She will have to pay a $1,000 fine. The prosecutors had suggested 7 years for the sentence. Potter apologized several times for what happened and asked for the family's forgiveness during the sentencing hearing. The ex-Minnesota cop was found guilty of first and second degree manslaughter after fatally shooting the 20-year-old black man in December. During the sentencing hearing, the courtroom was silent as the mother of Daunte spoke. She refused to refer to Potter by her first name, Potter only referred to Daunte as the driver through their exchange. After shooting Daunte, Potter was selfish and she was worried about getting in touch with her union rep. The judge was asked to give the maximum sentence. On April 11, 2021, Wright was pulled over by police for an expired tag and an illegal air freshener. Potter shot him when he tried to flee when cops tried to arrest him. You will recall. Potter said she thought she pulled out her gun instead of her taser. As you can see in the body cam footage, she yells out and then says "Holy sh**!". I just shot him. She broke down on the stand when she talked about the events that led up to Wright's death. Civil unrest erupted in the U.S. over how Black people are treated by police after the shooting. The legal team for Wright's family insisted that his death was preventable. Originally published at 9:03 AM.
