Jim Hagedorn died Thursday evening after a battle with cancer, his wife confirmed on social media. He was 59 years old.

Hagedorn was elected to represent Minnesota's 1st District after three unsuccessful bids for Congress.

He voted against the formal certification of Joe Biden's election win weeks after he voted against the impeachment of President Donald Trump. Hagedorn's voting record reflected Trump's positions.

Hagedorn was diagnosed with cancer and had received treatments at a hospital that initially went well, according to his office. He had a successful surgery in late 2020 to remove his cancer.

Hagedorn's wife, former Minnesota Republican Party Chairwoman, wrote on Facebook that Hagedorn loved representing the people of southern Minnesota.

She wrote that there was no stronger conservative in the state than her husband.

Hagedorn ran a now-deleted, misogynistic, racist, and anti-Native American website from 2002 to 2008. Hagedorn told The Associated Press that the blog was meant to be funny.

Hagedorn wrote in 2005 that President George W. Bush had selected a female Supreme Court nominee to fill the bra of a Supreme Court Justice.

Hagedorn thanked McCain for choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate.

He apologized on his Facebook page, saying that some of his hard-hitting and tongue-in-cheek commentary was less than artful or included language that could hurt feelings. I would like to apologize.

Hagedorn seemed to enjoy the atmosphere of the Trump era. If someone wants to run a political correctness and identity politics campaign against us, we will see what happens.
