Since the Note 9 was released, I haven't owned a Note phone. I thought it was the most perfect phone, complete with the best S Pen experience, ever delivered. I decided to swap the Note 9 out for the Pixel 4 XL because I realized I didn't use the S Pen as much as I used to.
I had a new reason to care about the S Pen after a few years.
The trade-off was worth it because the S Pen was not inside the Z Fold 3. The pen was big and comfortable to hold. It felt like a proper pen and was solid. After a few minutes, it didn't hurt my hand.
I had forgotten how much the difference was between the S Pens and the S22 Ultra. The first non-Note-sequel looks and feels similar to the Note 20 Ultra, with the tiny S Pen docked inside.
It made me wonder why so many Note lovers have been asking for this. I think the Note would be better if it was shipped with a larger S Pen and a proper case.

The name for the S Pen was born out of an era where everything was named after an S. Even if everything else had the same name, the Galaxy Note was the exception.
Most of the products have changed names over time. Not the S Pen.
The original S Pen was a smaller version of a Wacom tablet stylus. The S Pen was slightly enlarged until the Note 5. The ergonomics of the S Pen has not changed since then.
The S Pen that ships with the S22 Ultra is the biggest physical change in years. Since it is not a slimy plastic mess, it is much more pleasant to hold.
The problem is that it is still very small, and anyone with larger hands can attest to their hand feeling tight while using it.
The phone series ushered in the era of giant screens which are easier to use with large hands.
The larger, more comfortable S Pen is being shipped by SAMSUNG. If you bought a case with a pouch, you could dock the S Pen on any of the tablets.

This is a device that stays at home. The way you would carry a phone is not likely to apply to your tablet.
The S Pen sizes lack button tactility which has irked me for years. It was much easier to find the button when it had ribs on it.
Finding that button is a regular chore with modern S Pens and it is a problem with the smaller S Pen.
The larger S Pen has a flat side, while the smaller one has a button side. Even if it could still be improved, the larger S Pen is still easier to use.

If you thought the circuit boards were Star Wars blaster art or an AT-AT built from the scraps of an old device, you would be forgiven. The circuit boards in the above image are from the Note 20 Ultra, and they look like they were made for a tiny phone.
Engineers have to figure out how to fit an S Pen inside of a phone that is already packed with components. It takes a lot of work to create a design that can fit a large battery in and still keep the device from overheating.
Taking the S Pen out of the body will allow it to have a bigger battery or better thermal design. Both of them have come into question on the S22 Ultra.

The S Pen needs to be shipped with a phone that supports it and a case that can fit the pen and charge it at the same time. All of these devices have reverse wireless charging, so a case with this function doesn't need to be revolutionary. It needs to be practical.

The S Pen can be attached to the phone in a comfortable, practical way, thanks to the ingenious designs of many of the best cases for the Z Fold 3.
The option of having a larger, more comfortable S Pen and shipping it with a case would solve the wobble problem that modern devices with giant camera humps have.
It allows for larger batteries to be in these massive phones, and it is better for the phone's thermal design. It will see more use every day since it is a larger, more comfortable pen. If you want, a win, win, win.
Even if the pen is small, it's still great.
The most cutting-edge phone in the catalog is the S22 Ultra, which has a brilliant display, amazing cameras, and a S Pen inside the body.
